Rev. Steven Newberg

Pastor

Rev. Steven E. Newberg was called October 16, 2016 by a unanimous vote to serve as pastor at Ascension Lutheran Church. Pastor Newberg was baptized and attended school at Immanuel Lutheran, the downtown grandmother parish of Grand Rapids, MI. He graduated from Hillsdale College, having studied History, and then from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. Ascension called him from Lutheran Church of the Lakes at Addison, MI, where he had served as pastor since June 28, 2009. He and his wife Tessa have been married since 2009 and have four children, August, Dietrich, Frederick and Magdalena.

Rev. Robert Eble

Assistant to the Pastor

Robert D. Eble graduated from Valparaiso University with a Bachelor’s degree, and from Bowling Green State University with a Masters degree in geography and urban management. After working in public administration and utilities management he entered the seminary at Ft. Wayne receiving his M.Div degree in 1986. Pastor Eble was called to St. John Lutheran Church in Sherwood, Ohio where he served until 2008. During his tenure there he served as Circuit Counselor, LWML Counselor, Circuit Forum Officer, rest home worship leader, Field Education Supervisor for the Ft. Wayne Seminary as well as serving on and chairing the District Convention Committee. He also took part in many civic and community activities including being a founding member of the Sherwood Lion club and serving as a volunteer fire fighter. Pastor Eble sat on and chaired the board of a non-profit organization in Defiance, Ohio.

In 2008 Pastor Eble retired and moved to the Carolinas to be closer to his grandchildren. The retirement was short lived inasmuch as he has been serving vacancies for most of the time since then. Since moving to the Carolina’s Pastor Eble has served on an advisory board at UNCC, worked with Habitat for Humanity and has been involved in fund raisers for Special Olympics and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Pastor Eble has recently accepted the position of LWML Zone Counselor in Charlotte.

Pastor Eble was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio where he attended Lutheran day and high schools. He has two daughters: Charlotte of San Francisco and Mary of Concord, NC. He has two grandchildren both of Concord.

Mark W. Johanson

Minister of Music

Mark W. Johanson has served as Minister of Music at Ascension Lutheran Church, Charlotte since 2011. In this capacity he leads choral and instrumental activities within the church, ranging from handbell ringing to a folk music ensemble. Mr. Johanson’s exemplary keyboard skills are evident in his weekly leadership of hymns and liturgy from organ and piano in worship; outside of Sunday services, he is frequently engaged in collaborative piano and choral accompanying around the Charlotte region. Additionally, Mr. Johanson is often engaged in music leadership at church conferences and workshops throughout the Metrolina region.

A lifelong Lutheran musician, Mr. Johanson earned the Bachelor of Music Education degree from Valparaiso University (Indiana), where he studied with Joseph Bognar, Ralph Klapis, and Lorraine Brugh. Being exposed to several forms and shades of Lutheranism at Valpo as well as throughout his life, Mark aims to utilize music to seek unity across borders that have separated the faithful.

Mr. Johanson holds membership in the American Choral Director’s Association, American Guild of Organists, and Association of Lutheran Church Musicians. He is an alumni member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia fraternity, and is an Eagle Scout. He and his wife Elizabeth Marquardt live in Charlotte.
