Charlotte Symphony Chamber Singers presents David Lang’s “Little Match Girl” – Thursday, October 13, 7:30 PM
The Charlotte Symphony Chamber Singers, under the direction of Dr. Kenney Potter, will provide a concert featuring American composer David Lang’s “Little Match Girl,” based on Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Match Girl.” Influenced by J.S. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, the work is based on the story of an impoverished girl who sells matches on the streets, and on New Year’s Eve has not sold any and is afraid to go home for fear of being beaten by her father. She instead takes shelter and lights her matches to keep warm, but dies from hypothermia. The next morning, passersby find her corpse and take pity on her, though they had not the night before when she was still alive.
The concert will be held in the sanctuary of Ascension Lutheran Church on Thursday, October 13 at 7:30 PM. Tickets are $15 and will be available to purchase at the door, over the phone (704-372-1000), or online: click here to view the concert info and buy tickets. The Charlotte Symphony Chamber Singers, a 35-member choral ensemble, is an offshoot of the Charlotte Symphony Chorus (formerly The Oratorio Singers of Charlotte) that debuted in 2015 with a concert of both renaissance and modern composers, including Eric Whitacre and Kurt Knecht, at Ascension Lutheran Church.
Ascension Lutheran Church is a safe haven where all people are wanted, welcomed, and accepted in Christ.
