Get Off Your Donkey! Tending the Flame, the Southeastern District Outreach Conference

Tending the Flame is the annual Southeastern District conference held in Richmond, VA, where all people from LCMS congregations in the Southeastern District (North & South Carolina, Virginia, Washington D.C., Maryland, Delaware, and a section of Pennsylvania) gather together for a time of spiritual renewal and focus on outreach.

This year, Tending the Flame welcomes Reggie McNeal, author of Get Off Your Donkey!. Reggie challenges all Christians to live their lives as Jesus who calls us to be neighbors to those around us. Get Off Your Donkey spells out what it means to start somewhere with someone today.

Reggie McNeal spoke at Tending the Flame in 2010, a conference that several people from Ascension attended. Shortly after the conference, those from Ascension accepted God’s call to begin what has now become the Ascension Lutheran Soup Kitchen. A few months ago, Sally Hiller, Mission and Ministry Executive of the SE District, came to Ascension and joined us at the Soup Kitchen. Here’s a brief and uplifting video highlighting the conference, as well as clips from her time at the Soup Kitchen:

In addition to Reggie McNeal, we are also thrilled to announce that serving the conference this year as chaplain will be Pastor Eric Miller, and the musicians will be Ascension’s own Worship Musicians (Trinity Musicians) group.

Tending the Flame will be August 1-3, 2014 at the Doubletree by Hilton, 1021 Koger Center Blvd, Richmond, VA 23235. Individuals and families are welcome, as there are activities for adults, youth, and children.

Interested in participating? Check out the Tending the Flame website, for more information and to register. Register before June 1 before the fee increases! Plans to rent a van or bus and carpool together as a congregation are in the works–be on the lookout for signups.

It is our hope that we can have a large representation from Ascension be present at Tending the Flame this year. If you have questions about this exciting opportunity, please contact the church office.
